SAN JOSE DEL CABO - MEXICO AT A CALMER PACE
San Jose del Cabo could rightly be called the quieter, more relaxed sister to Cabo San Lucas, which has long been known for it's raucous night life and as the temporary home to the college crowd during infamous spring break. The town of San Jose del Cabo is home to about 50,000 people and it is the seat of the municipality of Los Cabos. The mission San Jose del Cabo was founded way back in 1730 which led to the formation of the town itself in or around 1842. The first known inhabitants of the area were the Pericú – their ancestors may have been trans-Pacific immigrants – and they were known to live in the area as far back as 14,000 years ago.
The first European contact with these people was in the early 16th century followed by Hernan Cortés for whom the Sea of Cortez is named. Later, in 1917, the area developed into a fishing village when an American company built a floating platform from which to catch tuna.
Nowadays, San Jose del Cabo is known as much for it's burgeoning arts district and quaint restaurants that span the gastronomical galaxy from traditional Mexican cuisine to gourmet French baked goods and fresh seafood.

You'll find plenty of handcrafted Mexican artwork including beautifully painted Talavera pottery and silver works in San Jose del Cabo. Dozens of art galleries and shops line the streets making shopping, or just browsing, a favorite amongst visitors to Los Cabos. |
Walking around and shopping in old San Jose is a real treat. Small shops offer up works by local artisans that range from; rustic Mexican furniture; high-quality handcrafted silver jewelry and accessories; hand-woven blankets; leather goods and more. While the town still retains it's old-world look and feel, that is likely to change with the construction of a new marina and several master-planned communities currently underway. The small town of La Playita abuts the new marina development area and real estate prices have sky rocketed in the last few years. While lots within the development start around $180,000 US, this is sure to keep rising and rising. Plans include several resort hotels and golf courses including courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman.
One of this area's biggest draws is the San Jose del Cabo Estuary. Here lush tropical vegetation surround the waters of the estuary creating a wildlife and bird sanctuary that must be seen to be appreciated. To get a sense of this place, watch our video of the San Jose Estuary below.

Owners Loic and Nathalie Tenoux first came to Los Cabos in the nineties, Loic in 1994 and Nathalie in 1996. Loic hails from Bordeaux, France where he was chef and proprietor of the restaurant La Provence. Switzerland holds claim to Nathalie, who studied Hotel Management in Lausanne. The two met in San Jose del Cabo while Nathalie was part of the management team at the Westin Regina and Loic was perfecting his skills as chef and businessman.
