| Knowing what you can afford to spend before you start searching for travel bargains to Cabo gets you started on the right foot. The trick is to stick with the budget. Once you get started searching, you're going to find some hotels or resorts that are simply stunning, but so is the price tag. You might find yourself succumbing to an urge to step it up a bit, or a lot. Ulitmately, you're going to end up spending much more than you wanted to and that in itself can ruin a great vacation. If an upscale experience is too high dollar for your entire stay, think about staying at a more affordable hotel or resort for the majority of your stay, then treat yourself to a night or two at that ritzy resort you've fallen in love with. That's why we suggest setting a "reasonable" budget, one that gives you a bit of wiggle room to upgrade if it fits your plan. |
The early bird gets the worm, and it most cases, the early travel deal searcher gets the best deals. We suggest 90 days out as a good place to start, earlier if you have that ability. Just like cruise lines, hotels often offer liberal discounts off rack rates when booked 60-90 days ahead of arrival. It helps them fill rooms while still leaving vacancies for those booking for stays less than 30 days away – last minute bookers will usually pay the highest rates of all. By starting your search for bargain travel to Cabo at least 90 days ahead of time, you'll not only get lower room rates, but you'll also have enough time to research where you'll be staying before making a commitment. Take notes or screen shots of resorts or hotels that you're especially interested in for reference. We'll talk about how to use that information a little bit later. |
Perhaps the most effective way to get the best possible deal is to be flexible on your travel dates. If you can, try and have 3-4 options, whether it's a quick weekend trip or a week long stay. If you can avoid flying on weekend's, you'll usually save money. Wednesday and Thursday flights tend to be the cheapest. If you're planning a week-long vacation, try to block out a full month as potential travel dates. Start your search looking at flight prices for the first week, second week, and so on. By covering a 30 day window you'll often find price fluctuations of 25-30% or more. Once you've dialed in the best week during that month, set your sights on refining your search and comparison mission. Look at Wednesday and Thursday arrivals and departures and use the cost of air travel as your guide for overall savings. When flight tickets are cheaper so too are most hotel rates! |

| Earlier on we told you there are dozens of online discount travel services, but not all are created equal. It seems like everyday there's another one that pops up, and we've tried them all and come to one conclusion. The top three services, meaning those that consistently provide substantial discounts and excellent customer service, are Priceline®, Travelocity® and Expedia®. Stick with those as your primary search and compare targets. Over the last 6 years, Priceline® has proven to be the one we've used most, but the others have, at times, beaten Priceline®. We've researched the best deals and found a host of specials from Priceline® that offer great value. Look for those below. |

While you won't be able to choose the exact hotel, you can select the quality you're looking for. On a recent trip in May of 2011, we bid a ridiculously low rate of $100 for a 4 star hotel and ended up with ocean view rooms at the Hilton Los Cabos... that's about a third the price of normal rack rates!! Remember those notes I said to take? Well, look at the lowest price for your preferred star level, cut that in half and try a bid. If it's not accepted, raise the bid in 10% increments. Diligence pays when booking discount travel. Sometimes, not often, wires get crossed and extra fees may get tacked on at checkout. The best way to avoid any confusion on what is or isn't included, and what you've already paid for, is to take copies of your online travel booking documents with you. We've seen folks get dinged for taxes or hotel service fees that they've already paid for online, even getting charged "upgrade" fees for the rooms they've booked. Having copies of your online travel purchase documents on hand can remedy those situations, and, should you need to contact your discount travel provider for help in resolving conflicts in charges, you'll have their number at your fingertips. |

RIU Resorts has two properties in Cabo San Lucas, the better of the two being the RIU Palace set on the Sea of Cortez just outside the Cabo marina. They offer all-inclusive packages that cover room, meals, drinks and a host of activities at the resort. Recent searches of the top three travel discounters showed Priceline® as the low-price leader for RIU with offers as low as $233 a night based on double occupancy. That's nearly $160 off of rack rates and nearly $50 less than a current special booked directly through RIU for a stay in late June into July. ESPERANZA RESORT - THE ULTIMATE 5-STAR CABO RESORT
If the best of the best is what you're after, then Esperanza Resort on the Sea of Cortez in Cabo's famed tourist corridor, needs to be on your list. Specials don't happen here very often. A search of the top three for a late June 5 night stay showed Priceline® had the lowest price per night at $485; Expedia® at $600; Travelocity® at $541 with the rate quoted at $585 per night directly from the resort website. ME CABO - A HOT AND HIP RESORT RIGHT ON MEDANO BEACH IN CABO
ME Cabo is known for it's hip and sexy look and feel, and when you toss in the world-famous Nikki Beach Club you have the makings of the perfect resort for the younger adult crowd. In fact, ME Cabo itself says it's "Well known for being a midweek Lounge hotel & a hip-sexy-cosmopolitan weekend Party Hotel Me Cabo holds a cool hypnotic groove." We'd agree. On our last check, the top 3 and the resort's own website quoted the same rate for a Summer stay.... $158 a night.
LOS CABOS GOLF RESORT - AFFORBABLE ROOMS, GREEN FEES WITH STYLE
Rated a 3 star property by Priceline®, we think it deserves better, especially since they've completed major room remodels in 2010. We've stayed here and found it to be cozy, quaint and peaceful and the accomodations were excellent. Rooms are more like condos with a variety of options available from studios to massive suites that can accomodate 12 guests... all set in Hacienda style villas. The Los Cabos Golf Resort website quotes room rates starting at $150 for Summer, $190 for Winter (peak season), but Priceline® has prices as low as $80 a night. Expedia quoted $119 while Travelocity reported no rooms available during our search dates of June 30th - July 7th.

The Hilton Los Cabos is one of our favorites for a relaxing getaway on what just may be the best swimming and snorkeling beach of any resort in Cabo San Lucas. It's location in the tourist corridor makes it easy to day-trip into Cabo or San Jose. Rooms are very well appointed offering partial or full ocean views. A watersports activity center sits right on the beach so you won't be lacking for things to do. Rates as low as $124 last time we checked.
PLAYA GRANDE AT LAND'S END - WALKING DISTANCE TO MARINA
Playa Grande is located on the Pacific side of Land's End within walking distance of the Cabo marina and downtown areas. We've stayed at this resort a couple of times and enjoyed it on each occasion. It's big, so if you're looking for a intimate getaway, this may not be the place for you. But, if luxury rooms, plenty of on-site restaurants and bars and great pools with swim-up bars is what you're after, Playa Grande is perfect.
