KEEPING
YOUR CATCH
REMEMBER TO BRING ICE CHESTS AND DUCT
TAPE IF BRINGING FISH HOME!
Although you can purchase these items in Cabo, the price is usually
quite high, even with the new Costco in town.
Charter boats are currently required to bring clients and their
fish to the filet station at the Sportfishing Dock for filleting.
There is also a photo station where locals will take a shot of you
and your catch alongside a famous marker in the Cabo San Lucas Marina.
We suggest that you stay with your catch while it is being filleted
or steaked to ensure that you are getting all of your fish back.
When the cleaning is completed, locals who provide packing and freezing
services will compete for your business. Although there are many
reputable providers of this service, we recommend Gricelda's
Smokehouse both for the quality of the service provided but
also for the convenient location in the Marina. For smoking and
vacuum packing they"re-fillet" your catch and remove all
bloodlines and muscle tissue, marinade in brine with spices, smoke,
vacuum pack your order, and hold for you until your departure from
Los Cabos.
Smoking of your fillets although a little pricey, the flavor of
fresh caught and smoked Tuna and Dorado makes it worth it. Smoke
a few pounds and vacuum pack and freeze the rest for transport home.
Ask the folks you choose whether or not they offer delivery of your
order to your hotel on the day of your departure, most of them will
do this.
The fees for filleting services generally depend on the size of
the fish. A few dollars for a small fish and larger fish requiring
more service time are charged accordingly.
We also recommend that you keep a few fillets to enjoy while still
in Cabo. There are many restaurants all along the marina and in
town that are happy to prepare your catch and provide all the sides
and tortillas you need to make a memorable meal. The cost is usually
around $5 a person for fish prepared several different ways.
Alexander’s
on the Marina and The
Office on Médano Beach are some of our favorites for
this service. For some terrific ways to prepare your catch, check
out our recipes page.

When it comes
time for your departure from Cabo, pack your fish in a sturdy ice
chest without ice, as the airlines will not allow ice in the chest.
After the airport officials check your baggage, seal your chests
with duct tape to keep them from popping open in flight.
Certain regulations apply when bringing your fish home and we provide
some important information for you on our
regulations page. Most flights to Cabo are short so your catch
will still be frozen when you arrive home ready for storage in your
freezer. We've had fish that has been vacuum packed and stored for
over a year and it's still firm and tasty! The key is good quality
vacuum packing, so choose your service provider well.
