SO
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO FISHING IN CABO SAN LUCAS AND THE EAST
CAPE?
There really isn't a bad time to take a fishing trip down to Los
Cabos or the East Cape of Baja. Different times of the year offer
different types of fishing. When marlin, dorado and tuna are scarce,
other species like wahoo, yellowtail, cabrilla and other members
of the grouper family make for great fishing days.
Most fisherman, especially first-time visitors to Cabo target billfish
as many of them have never had the chance to battle these awesome
creatures. However, great action can be had on a wide range of other
game fish including some that make great tablefare. Dorado and tuna
are two of the most sought after food fish in the ocean, great eating
and quite a challenge to land. Nothing is quite as spectacular as
the colorful and acrobatic dorado or the speed of the missile like
wahoo.
Often times, anglers who come to this paradise never take the time
to check out Baja Sur's incredible inshore and reef fisheries. The
strength of a cubera snapper is well known amongst those fishermen
who have tried their luck working rock ledges and points just a
few hundred feet off shore. Trolling the surfline near points and
along the edge of coves and structure can also be productive for
sierra (spanish mackerel) and roosterfish.

WHAT
ABOUT SURF FISHING IN CABO AND THE EAST CAPE OF BAJA?
Surf fishing is a great way to spend time exploring the coast of
Los Cabos and the East Cape. You'll find many well known spots such
as "Rooster Alley" in Los Frailes as well as discover
some of your own secret spots. There are companies that offer guided
surf fishing trips, some that utilize ATV's to cover more shoreline
while sight fishing roosters, sierra and even yellowtail within
casting distance of shore.
Flyfisherman will no doubt find unlimited opportunities to cast
a fly to a school of boiling roosters just outside the surfline.
For great tips and information on flyfishing Baja's pristine coast
as well as information on some of the most productive areas for
surf fishing, check out Gary
Graham's Baja on the Fly site.
Venture further north in La Paz and new angling opportunities come
along as there are islands close enough for a day trip for a bit
of fishing off local islands as well as a chance to go ashore and
try your luck working their shoreline. For excellent local knowledge
of the La Paz fisheries, we can't reccommend Jonathan
Roldan's Tailhunter International. Jonathan's lives in La Paz
and is also a columnist for Western Outdoor News and has earned
a reputation for great service with great results.
